Overview The Local Electoral Act 2001 requires all local bodies
to review their representation arrangements at least once
every six years. This process is called the Representation
Review.
The Representation Review requires the Council to determine
whether its Councillors are to be elected:
- by the electors of the district as a whole (ie district-wide),
or
- by the electors of wards, or
- a combination of both.
The Review also decides the number of Councillors to
be elected.
As part of the process, the Council is also required
to review the operation of existing community boards
and to
decide if more community boards should be established.
Representation Review 2009 The Council
completed a review of representation for the district
at the end of 2009. One appeal to
the
Council’s
decision was received and the Local Government
Commission heard the submission on 6 April.
The commission upheld the Council’s proposal
which will result in the following changes to the
representation arrangements for the election of
the Waimakariri District
Council on 9 October 2010:
1. Two new community boards will be established in the
Rangiora ward area and
the Woodend/Ashley ward area.
2. Changes will be made to the ward boundaries to include
the Fernside area in the
Rangiora ward and the Lees/Barkers Road area into the
Kaiapoi ward.
